Highlighting the Cultural Traditions Surrounding this 4-Day South Asian Wedding

Day One | The Mehndi Ceremony

The first day of Shannon and Phoenix’s 4-day South Asian wedding was the Mehndi Ceremony.

During this ceremony family and friends come together to get henna done by a Mehndi artist in preparation for the wedding festivities.

One aspect of this tradition that stood out to me the most was the bride getting her groom’s name hidden somewhere among the intricate henna tattoo. That is such a personal and intimate detail that I loved seeing unfold before me! This day was very sweet, intimate, and full of anticipation.

Day Two | The Haldi Ceremony

The Haldi ceremony took place on the second day of Shannon and Phoenix’s wedding celebration. This ceremony consists of family members taking turns spreading haldi (also known as turmeric) on the bride and groom. This traditional ceremony is to cleanse and offer blessings to the couple and their union by spreading haldi all over the bride and groom.

Having the opportunity to be immersed in this beautiful custom was so much fun to capture as well as all the joy among Shannon and Phoenix’s loved ones.

Day Three | The Wedding Ceremony

Shannon and Phoenix’s wedding ceremony was held on day three. To start off the day, Shannon got her hair and makeup done then her mom draped her saree for her.

This draping was a very tender and sentimental moment, completing the look, and leaving Shannon looking absolutely stunning. It was truly a treat getting to photograph a bride in such stunning, vibrant colors.

On the day of the ceremony, it’s tradition for the groom to enter with a Baraat (which is a grand entrance often achieved by arriving on horseback). For his Baraat, Phoenix entered the ceremony on a flying carpet with live music and a singing, dancing entourage–it was a blast.

The ceremony itself was full of sweet traditions and vibrant colors. We concluded day three with portraits of the newlyweds. You’re going to be speechless…I mean we still are!

Day Four | The Reception

On the final day, we took the wedding party and family photos.

They truly had the reception to conclude the four-day wedding experience.

Cocktail hour was full of cute candid photos and genuine smiles all over the room. Once everyone was seated, the couple was adorned with speeches, stories, and sentimental toasts. It was fantastic seeing everyone connect over their shared experiences.

Before the dancing carried the night to a close, we captured each of the bride and grooms’ parties performing dances that they had choreographed specifically for this celebration! To describe it in one word….it was epic!!

Shannon and Phoenix’s 4-day South Asian wedding was so fun and so precious. We’re thrilled with the rich cultural experience, the vibrancy of the gallery, and as always, the honor of taking part in a love story!
